Course Descriptions

Contemporary Cultural Theory

This course studies theories on culture. First we will explore the concept of culture, and then, the main flows of contemporary cultural theory and finally we will make efforts to develop the skills to criticize and analyze current cultural phenomenon by using various cultural theories.

History of Cultural Transformation and Interchange in Northeast Asia

This course aims to understand the essence of the three Northeast Asian countries'(Korea, China, Japan) cultures from a comparative and diachronic point of view. First, we will explore how the three countries influenced one another, and how their cultures were formed under the modern East Asian order. Secondly, we will study the modernization and commercialization process of each culture, as well as the capitalistic regionalization process after the modern capitalism world system began.

Theory and Practice in Cultural Management

This course is designed to understand the theory and practice of corporate cultural management. We will examine detailed case studies, in which corporations engrave their cultural images into products and services, as well as enhance their cultural values through social contributions such as providing sponsors for performances, exhibitions, concerts and voluntary support for the socially weak people.

Basic Practice in Graphic Design

This course studies the graphic tools needed for cultural contents planning and development, and uses them as basics for contents production. In addition, this course focuses on cultivating creative designer minds in order to come up with creative contents, and also provides the opportunity to learn how to materialize images through computer graphics.

Contents Planning and Practice

This course is designed to learn the features, planning & production process, and basic knowledge for production of cultural contents. We will also practice planning and producing contents suitable for media by using a project focused approach.

Korean Cultural Archetypes and Their Application

This course will examine the tangible and intangible contents which appear in Korean traditional texts, and try to understand its archetypes. We will then explore the effective ways to apply them to actual contents planning. In other words, we will learn how to characterize and recreate Korean cultural archteypes into products or performances.

Cultural Technologies and Trends

This course will cover the past development trend of cultural technology which has influenced modern society's cultural consumption patterns, and also explore, in which direction the cultural trend has changed, and how consumption patterns will change in the future. The final aim of this course is to develop the skills to plan creative cultural products according to future cultural trends.

Korean Cinema

This course will conduct research on various cultural phenomenon related to society, policy, history and Korean cinema culture with a focus on film. By exploring main producers and the trend of their works, and by critically analyzing those trends, we will investigate the characteristics and current situation of Korean cinema.

Japanese Cinema, Animation and Culture

This course will explore Japanese cinema by examining film and animation. We will start with the basic question of why has visual culture developed in Japan, and move on to studying the development process and features of each culture from the perspective of Japanese Culture Theory.

Chinese Cinema & Performing Arts

This course will explore and discuss the various social phenomenon and Chinese culture engraved within their film, drama, play and other performing arts. In addition, we will expand our understanding on modern Chinese mass culture by studying the production and consumption patterns of various cinema and performing arts in China.

Symbolism of Archetypes

This course explores various cultural archetypes in detail. The ancient imagination roots within these archetypes will be studied and applied to current cultural icons. This course also helps students interested in cultural contents, to develop their planning skills and creativity. Through the study of images engraved widely within cultural heritage, we will learn to understand humans as a whole and overcome regional, racial and cultural differences. In addition we will gain an understanding of in-depth social culture codes by expanding the range of humanities.

Korean Classical Narratives and Cultural Contents

This course is designed to study the cultural features of Korean classical narratives through Korean classic literature, folklore, fables etc. and upon this foundation, we will learn to transfer Korean classic narratives into cultural contents suitable for media such as film, drama, animation and games. Through such studies, we will aim to develop planning abilities required for creative work.

SF Narratives and Cultural Contents

This course covers the history, techniques and contents of SF narratives through media such as novel and film, as well as the application of SF narratives into cultural contents of modern media such as film and games. As a whole, the relation between SF narratives and futurology will be examined. In addition, we will conduct training exercises on composing simple SF narratives. The final aim is to develop planning and composing skills of 21st century cultural contents, based on SF.

Marketing of Cultural Goods in Northeast Asia

This course is designed to study the concept, characteristics, marketing strategy, and intellectual property protection of cultural products, which are results of creative activities expressing values and significance of particular regional cultures. We will also conduct surveys and discussions on successful case studies of cultural product marketing in Northeast Asia.

Market Research

This course covers theoretical methods of systematically collecting, recording and analyzing material about consumers and the market, and focuses on practically applying them through detailed case studies.

Modern Korean Literature and Northeast Asia

This course comparatively explores the culture and people, society, ideas, history and historical relations of the three countries, Korea, China and Japan, as shown in Korean literature texts. It also covers the process of modern Korean literature, and its relation to Japanese literature and ideas, as well as the geographical relations among the three Northeast Asian countries, and comparatively explores their everyday cultures. The final aim is to gain a wider understanding of the people and culture of Korea, China and Japan, as well as to comprehend their cultural map.

Modern Chinese Literature and Its Transformation

This course conducts a historical overview of modern Chinese literature, starting from the establishment of socialism into cultural revolution in 1949, the reform period of the early 1980s, and on to the period of enlightenment under the influence of western modernism in the early 20th century. We will aim to understand the rapidly changing modern Chinese society, by examining the various characters within modern literature works.

Contemporary Japanese Literature and Post-modernism

This course examines how the value system focused on nationalism of contemporary Japan caused problems in postwar Japanese society, and how it started breaking up. Further on, we will investigate the new directions of modern life after this breakup of contemporary values, and deepen our understanding of modern Japanese society and culture.

Narratives in Chinese Literature and Cultural Archetypes

This course covers various stories within Chinese myths, epics and classic novels. The common 'stories' familiar to the Chinese people will be searched for within early myths and various narrative literature, and we will make efforts to understand the basic features of Chinese cultural archetypes, based on the archetype of those 'stories' that we may discover.

Japanese Myths and Cultural Archetypes

This course will examine Japanese cultural archetypes within Japanese myths found in film, animations and cartoons. It aims to develop literature analyzing skills and enhance understanding of overall Japanese culture.

Storytelling and Media Adaptation

This course covers the basic elements and features of storytelling, and connects them with learning the skills of digital storytelling. Practices on web document writing, entertainment writing, story writing will be conducted, along with the study of theory and practices regarding the application of storytelling to media such as myths, literature, cinema and games.

Cultural Industries and the Circulation of Cultural Goods

This course covers the development process and current issues of Northeast Asian culture concerning film, animation, cartoon, music, performance and publishing. In addition, we will examine the dynamics between national boundaries and capital flow, through the study of cultural goods circulating beyond boundaries.

Chinese Language and Cultural Codes

This course is designed to study the main cultural codes of modern China within Chinese expressions appearing on advertisements, brand names and internet wordings of China, Taiwan and Hongkong.

Japanese Language and Cultural Codes

This course aims to enhance Japanese communication skills and deepen the understanding of Japanese mental consciousness, by examining Japanese people's view of nature and universe, interpersonal awareness, social consciousness, material consciousness, moral consciousness and aesthetic consciousness through the studies of grammatical features in Japanese language customs, idioms, proverbs, the use of honorific tones, and the development of passive forms.

Korean Literature and Performing Arts

Korean literature has traditionally been a part of performing arts, and after the modern times it has become one of the main contents of performing arts. This course aims to enhance understanding on performance planning by examining the current situation of performing arts based on modern literature texts, the process of making cultural contents into performing arts, and the process of media change etc.

Copyright Laws

This course is designed to study legal protection regarding literary work such as novel and essays, industrial copyrights such as computer programs and design copyrights. The social significance of how Copyright Law influences cultural development will be studied, as well as the types of literary work and ranges & limitations of copyright.

Cultural Policies in Northeast Asia

This course will comparatively examine the cultural policies of Korea, China and Japan. The features of each country's cultural policy and its historical background will be covered. In addition, we will study how the differences between national culture policies influence their cultural exchange.

Korean, Chinese and Japanese Cultures in Comparative Perspective

This course covers a general outline of Korean, Chinese and Japanese culture. In addition, by comparative studies, we will develop perspectives in examining the overall society and culture of each country in Eastern Asia.

Cultural Exchanges in Northeast Asia

This course will cover the phenomenal features, historical trends and structural backgrounds of the cultural exchange among the three countries of Northeast Asia, in line with the worldwide trend of globalization. In addition, we will explore the significance and outlook of the Korean Wave within this region.

Practice in Content-Based English Translation

This course is designed to improve english skills by practicing Korean-English and English-Korean translation of mass literature and screenplay. In addition, we will be able to learn the cultures of modern english through the translation of contents related to the internet. This will lead to the development of our English skills, to be used for introducing Korean culture.

Practice in Content-Based Chinese Translation

This course is designed to improve Chinese skills by practicing Korean-Chinese and Chinese-Korean translation of mass literature and screenplay. In addition, we will be able to learn the cultures of modern China through the translation of contents related to the internet. As a result, we will also make efforts to introduce Korean culture in Chinese.

Practice in Content-Based Japanese Translation

This course is designed to practice the translation of various genre of cultural contents such as Japanese fairytales, essays, short stories, film and drama scripts, cartoons, and internet related contents. As a result, we will train our skills to introduce and deliver information and knowledge on Japanese culture and society.

Planning and Practice in Performing Arts

This course aims to develop planning skills and successful planning know-how for performing arts. The whole process of performance planning and the required basic skills for planning operations will be studied. In addition, practical skills required for the planning and execution of performing arts, including document writing and presentations, will be developed.

Planning and Practice in Book Publishing

This course will cover the basic knowledge and planning skills related to the whole process of publication planning. Overall understanding on the publication process, including market analysis, subject selection, writer liaison, editing and design, marketing, production, will be enhanced. In addition, practical operations skills will also be developed through exercises.

Field Studies on Cultural Industries

This course is designed to improve practical operation skills, by learning the basic communication ability, sense and attitude required in the related work field. Most work fields include companies or organizations related to domestic and overseas cultural industries.

Exercise in Portfolio-Building

In this course, each student will actually plan and produce a portfolio as a tool to promote one's artistic creativity and professionalism. The basics principles and actual building methods of portfolio-building will be studied through books, videos and computer software.
