1934 – Year Founded

The 80-year history of Kwangwoon University started when Dr. Kwang-woon Cho established the “Chosun Radio School” in Namdaemun Union which he was managing to improve the nation’s science and technology education.

1960s

Every ounce of passion, heart, and soul was put into strengthening the foundation of the electronic engineering college.

All the efforts were put into transforming the college into a full-time, 4-year engineering college. The college recruited respected professors all across the country and invested tremendous amount of energy building facilities and equipment, supplies, and services

1970s

1970s was when Kwangwoon started its ambitious ’10-Year University Development Plan’ that includes specific goals and plans for developing the campus and educational facilities.

But, it was also a tumultuous and gloomy period when universities' admistrative autonomy and developmental policies were the under the control of the authoritarian Yushin Regime established by Park Chung-hee's military coup.

  • In January 1973, Kwangwon held an academic conference for science education and scientification of education at Olympus Hotel, Incheon.

1980s

1980s was when Kwangwoon University, formerly Kwangwoon Engineering College, started preparing to become a true collegiate university.

To become a systematic, collegiate university, in 1981 Kwangwoon started expanding its facilities, laboratories, equipment and library facilities and initiated a curriculum reform. And finally, on October 19, 1987, Kwangwoon became Kwangwoon University, a true collegiate university.

1990s

The 90s was when the University underwent a number of hardships including an admission scandal but it was also the period that Kwangwoon dedicated all of its efforts to regain prestige and trust.

  • Seong-cheon Yun was inaugurated as the 3rd President on December 16, 1993. President Yun was the first president to be elected by direct votes of professors.

  • After the 3rd President Seong-cheon Yun resigned from his post, Professor Jun-gil Kang appointed by the Kwangwoon Foundation was inaugurated as the 4th President of Kwangwoon on September 24, 1994.

2000s

While strengthening its foundation as an electronics and information engineering college, Kwangwoon University continuously strived to become a leading collegiate university that leads the electronic engineering field and information society.
