Department of Korean Language and Literature

The Department of Korean Language and Literature is aimed at producing individuals who can adapt to the rapidly changing modern society of ours with knowledge and proper understanding of our language and literature. To this end, the Department offers traditional courses in modern literature, classical literature, Korean linguistics as well as courses in creative writing and Korean informatics.

Course Descriptions

Study of Classic Korean Novels

This course covers in general, the historical progress and types of old Korean novels along with the famous writers and works of the time, and also attempts to conduct a distant overview of old novels with an emphasis on the abundance of literary heritage.

History of Classical Literature

This course is aimed at understanding the origin and development of Korean classical literature as well as its historical structure.

Theories on Classical Poetry

In this course, students are invited to the world of Shilla's Hyangga and Goryeo's Gayo, two of the oldest poetic forms in Korea.

Korean Folklore

This course is focused on the oral tradition of Korea, and deals with narrative literature, folk song, shamanist song, Pansori, folk theater and proverbs.

Understanding of Korean Classical Narrative Literature

This course conducts a chronological review of inception and developments of classical Korean literature spanning from ancient times to Gabo-gyeong-jang(a period of political reform during the Chosun dynasty between 1894~1895).

Classic Poems and Songs

This course covers the general values and peculiarities of Shilla folksongs, Koryeo folksongs and Chosun poems and songs, and advances on to study the meaning of ancient poems and songs in the broad context of Korean literature.

Understanding of Chinese Writing and Classics

This course is designed to help students learn and understand the writings and classics of ancient China and Korea, which permeate every aspect of our daily life. This course aims at helping students to understand Chinese with ease.

Understanding of Chinese Writing and Classics

This course aims to acquire the necessary knowledge required to understand certain types of narration which are newly embossed in new media of the multi-medium period.

History of Modern Korean Literature

This course is designed to conduct diachronic examinations on Korean modern literature such as poetics, novel and criticism, with an emphasis on comprehensive understanding through a topographical overview of modern literature.

Theory and Practice of Criticism

This course is to cultivate critic recognition ability regarding various conflicts of Korean society through literature and critic education. We will aim to practive actual criticism based on the study of various criticism theories. Critic recognition ability and its expressive ability are skills needed in various fields of society, as well as literature.

Poetic Recognition and Daily Aesthetics

The purpose of this subject is to acquire the necessary knowledge in order to understand general Korean modern poetics. Most of all, the important thing in college is, not only to maximize creation and appreciative ability about poetry through studying, but also to develop an 'eye' capable of discovering beautiful values in the concrete life, in which a poetry genre, unlike a narrative genre, is a unique art recognition and form. Therefore through this course students can deepen their knowledge about Korean modern poetry and through poetic recognition, cultivate the ability to discover beautiful values which breathe with us in daily life.

Readings in Modern Literature

This course is designed to gain an overall understanding of Korean contemporary literature. Respecting the separate characteristics of poetry and novel as a genre, we will aim to cultivate the ability of understanding both poetry and novel at the same time and studying fusion for poetry and novel.

Modern Novel Theory

This course deals with fundamental understanding of the Korean contemporary novel. We will analyze a contemporary novel through an approach of the subject theory a little more systematically, and try to grope for methodology to study the result of the literature that main problem products mastered of the exiting pair novel for the depths.

Modern Poetic Theory

This course deals with fundamental understanding of Korean modern poetry. Watch main poetry theory criticism for an issue by poetry historic well in the Korea present age; plant it, raise width and depth of the understanding for the modern poetry through an approach of the depth for the problem products.

Media Environment and Publication Planning

Due to recent emergence of all kinds of advanced media, drastic change of environment has made our everyday life rapidly change. Therefore, social needs to newly plan and publish all sorts of publications(books, e-book, advertisement copy, naming, digital contents erc.) are very high. This course is not to acquire planning ability of existing printed media, but to acquire practical ability based on professional knowledge to plan publications actively confronting media environment inappropriate to the information era.

It is a main problem to correspond to the society where various notes are demanded actively. A poetry, a novel, not to mention reviews, a drama scenario, scenarios cultivate the creative ability of the language by, actually, practicing a note of the literary arts of various fields.

In this course, students will be introduced to the analyses and theories on Korean phonemes, as a basis for phonetic knowledge of the Korean language.
