The research team of Professor Hyuk-Jun Oh (Department of Electronics and Communications Engineering) of Kwangwoon University was selected as the leading 433 MHz-based communication technology developing organization. The project is promoted by the Ministry of Science and ICT, and the total project cost between 2021 and 2025 is 18.9 billion won.

Currently, commercial drones can fly only up to 1km for communication reasons. The goal of this project is to develop communication technology for drones based on low frequency (433 MHz) bands so that drones can fly up to 20km even in the invisible range. The consortium, led by Kwangwoon University, involves four universities (such as KAIST, Mokpo Maritime University, and Hanbat University), as well as eight companies (such as Villiv Micron, Quaternion, A-Net Solution, Silicon R&D, Solid Labs, KST, AOB, and Ned Solution).

The Kwangwoon University consortium will be conducting research and development of 433MHz-based communication technology for the next five years. It also plans to develop SoC (system on chip) for 433MHz band communication so that it can be commercialized immediately after business completion. The consortium will demonstrate long-distance flight, such as maritime management, disease control, material transportation, and flight in the invisible area, to present the fields of application.
