Dr. Hongliang Li, who earned his Ph.D. in Professor Sangshin Lee’s lab in the Department of Electronic Engineering at Kwangwoon University, has been awarded the '2023 Chinese Government Award for Outstanding Self-financed Students Abroad'.
This award, established by the China Scholarship Council under the Ministry of Education of China in 2003, is given to Chinese students pursuing a Ph.D. abroad on their own finances who have achieved remarkable academic success. Every year, around 600 Chinese students worldwide receive this award. Recipients must exhibit exceptional academic achievements, international research capabilities, and outstanding personal character and academic potential. Dr. Li met these strict criteria and received this prestigious award based on his research achievements at Kwangwoon University.
Since 2019, Dr. Li has been conducting an integrated master's and doctoral program under the guidance of Professor Sangshin Lee. Professor Lee's research team leads world-class studies in the fields of nanophotonics, metamaterials, and photonic semiconductor integrated circuits, achieving significant results in diverse applications such as next-generation optical communications, sensors, and imaging systems. Dr. Li made significant contributions to the development of photonic metasurfaces and beamforming technology, advancing the design and optimization of photonics systems.
Over the past five years, Dr. Li has published 11 SCI-level journal papers and 8 EI-level papers in prestigious international journals such as Laser & Photonics Reviews, ACS Photonics, and Advanced Optical Materials. He has also presented 18 conference papers and obtained 3 patents in South Korea. As the first author of 6 SCI-level papers, 3 of them were featured on the covers of prominent journals such as ACS Photonics, Advanced Optical Materials, and Nanoscale. Dr. Li's research has had a significant impact on the photonics field, receiving broad recognition, including three Best Paper Awards from the Optical Society of Korea.
Dr. Li expressed his gratitude, stating, "I am deeply honored to receive this award," and shared his aspirations to "continue advancing research on photonics-related optical devices and systems, and strive to apply the results to practical industrial applications."
