NanoGenesis Inc., a
company founded by Professor Junseop Shim (Department of Electronics
Convergence Engineering) has been selected for the 2024 'Super Gap Startup 1000
Project' by the Ministry of SMEs and Startups.
The 'Super Gap Startup
1000 Project (DIPS 1000 )' is a five-year initiative, running from last year
until 2027, jointly led by the public and private sectors. It aims to select
and provide focused support to over 1,000 outstanding deep-tech startups in 10
key new industries, fostering them to become global unicorns and drive the
future of the national economy.
Many experts around
the world are identifying eco-friendly energy as the key player that will lead
the next generation of startups, driven by the global issues of 'carbon
neutrality' and 'energy security.'
NanoGenesis Inc.,
recognized as a top-tier company in the eco-friendly energy sector, was
selected for its highly regarded technology of silicon anode material, which
incorporates hybrid graphene to overcome the limitations of current secondary
batteries. NanoGenesis Inc. coated silicon with hybrid graphene to suppress
excessive volume expansion and interconnected it with graphene to enhance
lifespan stability. To enable long-distance driving, electric vehicle batteries
need increased charging capacity, and battery costs must be lowered to make
electric cars more affordable. NanoGenesis Inc. is using hybrid graphene
technology to produce silicon anode materials with increased charging capacity
and long lifespan at a low cost on a pilot production line.
According to Korea
Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO), the organization overseeing the
commercialization of technology in the eco-friendly and energy sector for the
'Super Gap Startup 1000 Project,' the selection process involved top-level
faculty from Korea Institute of Energy Technology, executives from Forbes 1000
companies, and global investment evaluators. They selected the most promising
companies.
NanoGenesis Inc. can
receive up to 1.1 billion won in total funding, including 600 million won for
commercialization over the next three years and 500 million won for R&D
over the next two years. NanoGenesis Inc. will also receive support in various
areas, including technology certification, assistance with overseas expansion,
access to a national startup support network, entrepreneurial development expertise,
R&D and demonstration infrastructure. Through this, they plan not only to
further advance their top-tier silicon anode technology but also to expand into
Japan, the United States, and Europe.
