2023 GKS Scholarship Program for Self-financed International Students

 

National Institute for International Education (NIIED) is currently receiving

applications for 2023 GKS scholarship program for self-financed foreign

students. Foreign students who are currently studying in universities (including

junior college) in South Korea can apply for the program.

1. Purpose

  To raise awareness of the benefits of studying in Korea and to motivate financially self-supporting foreign students by subsidizing outstanding students.

 

2. Number of expected grantees:  250

 

3. Scholarship Information

Scholarship support: 5 million won (500,000 won per month)

Scholarship period: March 2023 to December 2023 (10 months)

Scholarship payment procedure

- The National Institute for International Education (NIIED) will pay twice a year (once per semester) to the relevant university.

- The university then provides scholarships at the end of each month to the relevant scholarship students.

 

4. Eligibility

Applicants must qualify all the requirements below.

Previous recipients of the 2nd self-financed scholarship program cannot apply 

 

1. International self-sufficient international students who are enrolled in their 2nd year or higher undergraduate degree at a domestic university (including junior college) based in the academic year of application as of March 2023.

-Except for those who are taking a leave of absence or are scheduled to take a leave of absence from school, those who have completed the second semester including the excess semester, those who are scheduled to be dispatched overseas, and those who are scheduled to graduate early.

 

- Holders of foreign nationality managed by the university as a foreign student can apply

Transfer students can apply if they have studied at a domestic university for more than 1 year (2 semesters).

Excluding students who have only registered without obtaining credits, graduate school students, and cyber university students.

Recipients of similar scholarships provided by the Korean government, universities, or other organizations cannot apply

(This means the case of receiving support of living expenses, and the amount exceeds 500,000 won on average per month)

 

2. Those who have averaged over 80 points out of 100 during the entire school year.

In the case of transfer, the average of conversion score of 100 points for the entire period of enrollment (domestic university) and the conversion score of 100 points for the entire period of enrollment.

3. Students with an average grade of 80 points or higher out of 100 points in the previous semester.

The results shall be recorded as 100 points converted, and the university manager shall record the converted

score on the transcript, seal or sign the transcript, those who score 80 points in round-up cannot apply.

4. Those with TOPIK level 4 or higher.

*Only report card within the valid period on March 1, 2023

 

5. Application Methods and Required documents

 

How to apply: Online application

- Online application from Study in Korea website (http://www.studyinkorea.go.kr)

- Online Application Period: Feb 6, 2023 (Mon) ~ Feb 24, 2023 (Fri) 18:00

- How to apply: Sign up for membership → Online application → Print application → Submit to university along with required documents

 

Submission of application documents: Submit necessary documents to Kwangwoon University Office of International Affairs (Donghae Culture and Arts Center 111, 02-940-5014-5)

- Documents submission period: Feb 20, 2023 (Mon) ~ Feb 27, 2023 (Mon) 14:00

 

List of documents to be submitted

(Required)

1. Application form (after applying online from the Study in Korea Comprehensive System), the English name of the application form must be the same as the passport)

2. Passport copy

3. Certificate of enrollment

4. Transcript

 *Results for the entire semester of study (1copy each)

 *In case of transfer, the entire semester transcript issued by the previous school (domestic university) must also be submitted.

 *In principle, transcripts are issued with “100 points converted score” written on them. If you need to add the grades of the previous semester to a '100-point conversion score', be sure to sign or seal the confirmation of the person in charge of the university

5. Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK) score report

  *Only score report within the validity period as of March 1, 2023.

 *Seal or signature of the person in charge of the university to verify the original copy (printed copies from the TOPIK homepage are accepted as originals)

6. Self-introduction letter and study plan (must be written in Korean) (use the attached form->Self Introduction & Study Plan 자기소개서 및 학업계획서 

(Optional)

7. Proof of Overseas Koreans: Only the required person shall submit.

  *Overseas Koreans certificate issued by the diplomatic mission, or certificate of alien registration and fact-finding certificate containing the qualifications of overseas Koreans, etc.

A copy of the alien registration card must be checked and sealed by the person in charge of the university

8. Test of Proficiency in Korean (TOPIK)  speaking test score

- Submitted only by the person concerned

- Only general test scores are accepted (demonstration or simulation evaluation is not allowed)

 

Precautions

    The English name of the applicant must be the same as that of the passport.

    In principle, applications and other related documents should be prepared in A4 standard.

    Application must be made through the university you are attending.

    The transcript shall be limited to the official report card issued by the relevant school and shall include the 100-points conversion score.

    Submit the documents after putting them together using staplers, clips, tongs, etc. in the following order

Order: a) Application form b) Passport copy c) Certificate of enrollment d) Transcript (transferred school, current school) e) TOPIK score report f) Self-introduction letter & study plan g) other overseas Korean certificate documents 

 

   If the contents of the submitted documents are inaccurate or insufficient, they shall be excluded from the screening.

    Even after being selected as a scholarship student, if a false entry is confirmed, a change in academic records (early graduation, lack of credits for the first semester, etc.) occurs, the qualification of the scholarship student is lost

 Applicants who submitted documents with false information or missed any required documents will be  disqualified

    Vacancies due to loss of scholarship qualifications will not be filled separately.

    Submitted documents will not be returned.

 

 

6. Selection Process and Schedule

Selection method

    A scholarship selection committee is formed to examine the selection of scholarship students.

    Qualitative evaluation is conducted only for those who are ranked around 1.5 times the number of people selected by category based on the combined score of quantitative evaluation and additional points of overseas Koreans.

    Selection of final scholarship students in order of the highest total score by category.

    In case of a tie, scores will be reevaluated with the following order

1)    GPA  2) Korean proficiency 3) Qualitative evaluation

    Announcement of 2023 Scholarship Selection Plan (NIIED → University): Feb 1 (Wed)

    Online application (Applicants → NIIED): Feb 6 (Mon) ~ Feb 24 (Fri)

    Submission of application documents and confirmation of recommendation of SIMS for Korea Study Comprehensive System (Applicants → University → NIIED): Mar 10 (Fri)

    Setting up of the Screening Committee and Screening of application documents (NIIED): End of March

    Notice of the selected scholars students (NIIED → University): Early April

    1st Semester Scholarship Payment (University  NIIED): Mid-April

    Submission of 1st semester Grade Transcript (University → NIIED): Early August

    1st Semester Scholarship Calculation (University → NIIED): Early September

    Notice of the 2nd semester selected scholars (NIIED → University): End of September

    2nd Semester Scholarship Payment (NIIED → University): End of September

    2nd Semester Scholarship Calculation (University → NIIED): Mid-January 2023
